The students investigated the difference in the benefit of inclined planes at different inclines in "Inclined To Move".
T.J. and his seated partner test the plane at a 40 cm incline. |
Sam tests at 50 cm!!! |
Jason enjoys working alone. |

The students used a Slinky™ to investigate the relationship between Wave Speed, Wavelength, and Frequency.
Tayler & Stephanie create their wave. Lenny keeps time.
Andy & Dillon observe as Josh holds one end of the wave.
Stephanie helps create a wave.
Eddie & Jackson are enthralled as Leyla & Jake demonstrate their wave.
Jackson keeps time as Eddie contributes to the wave pattern.
Chris times as Matt & Cameron create a good wave pattern.
Kyle & Liz are in awe of Kaslin's wave.
--- And Erika's on the other end of that wave!
Tyler & Nathan must be wary of Trevor's wild wave - although Nathan keeps on smiling!
Sara seems unsure of the wave. Or maybe the photographer.
C.J. & Sam have a good ol' time creating standing waves!!
Laura keeps time as Shayna works on the wave.
Matt works on his end of the wave.
Matt
& Cameron get a good standing wave going.
Chris is just amazed at the near - perfection of Matt & Cameron's wave!!
Kayla
& Stephanie get a nice standing wave, with a wavelength of 2 meters,
as Sami times them.
| Jacob
times Jason & Chuck during their standing wave.
Destiny keeps time as Gayle & Saskia create a beauty of a wave. Jazmin sure enjoyed it!
Matt times the long wave created by Jordan & Jim (bottom of photo).
Rachel tries to keep hold of her wild wave! |

In their study of sound, the students investigate different ways of making different types of sound. One method was the "Bullroarer", a simple device that creates a "rurring" sound when spun through the air. Their task was to investigate the device, then modify it in some way so as to improve the sound created (as in, make it louder, change the pitch, etc.). Here are pictures of the students doing their initial investigations.
Ian & Scott showed natural talent with these!
While others required more practice. In the back, right side, Justin smacks himself in the arm!
Ian
whacks himself.
Taylor & Jessica keep practicing, while Leyla takes a break.
Cameron & Matt let the wind wind up their strings for them.
For some reason, Leyla attacks Kyle. Taylor, Jessica, Jake, & T.J. witness the attack while trying to stay out of the way.
Saskia keeps tryin'!
Leyla struggles against the breeze, and Jessica tries to pick up tips - on what not to do!
Tyler sneak-attacks Mallory & Kaslin, who are watching Sara's bull-roarer spin in the wind.
Jason's got the touch.
Laura's catching on, but I think Sami earns another bruise.
Like a batter pointing to the bleachers, Kyle signals a home run spin.
Erika, Sara, & others in section 8-3 practice.
Mariah puts her shoulders and hips into it.
Mariah's full-body spinning seems to be working...at entertaining her classmates!
Nathan & Jesse get the hang of it!
Kayla & Sami duel each other, but end up attacking themselves.
Some people sought cover from the slight breeze that blew in.
Not checking their surroundings, Kamila & Jesse practice dangerously close to each other...
...In the end, however, Kamila gave up & Jesse hit himself, so they posed no real threat to each other.
Sam practices cautiously. |
Mariah has some difficulty. | Scott angles his head for safety. |
~~~~~ Bullroarer Modifications ~~~~~
The next day, the students were to bring their bullroarers back, with some sort of modification to make them louder, or have a higher or lower pitch. Unfortunately, most of the modifications produced sounds very similar to the original. I've included the most unique (or humorous) ones here. Thank you to those who took these pictures! (Let's see... Nic, Rachel, Shayna...and one or two more!)
Kayla gets some good results.
Ian has second thoughts about his design.
Alana gives it a good spin.
Becki's design was very unique, if ineffective.
Jessica demonstrates her modification.
Cameron does not look enthused!
Eric puts in a good effort...spinning someone else's modification!
Wayne looks for the signal to stop.
Eddie had a great time demonstrating his!
Danielle seemed unsure, but it worked fine!
Jake spins with emotion!
Chris seemed pleased with his modification.
Saskia reluctantly demonstrates her modification.
Kyle, "Mr. Expressionless", gives a great demonstration.
Laura 'rush'-ed to get through hers.
Leyla seemed to enjoy her change.
Sam studies her bull-roarer, wondering why it suddenly let her down.
Rachel is pleased to demonstrate her modification.
Taylor was proud to show how hers changed.
Sami was reluctant, but gave a quick demonstration anyway.
Taylor & Leyla -- wait! They're not demonstrating bull-roarers here!?!?!
With continued effort, Sam gets a good sound out of her modified bull-roarer. | T.J. seems wary of his bull-roarer, like it's attacked him one too many times... |
A picture of me - Mr. Sawyer - at work recording my own data. For once, I'm not behind the camera!
